MUSIC MAGAZINE: Audience Research Focused

Here is a interview of my focus group who were aged 16+, I gave them a Q magazine with it's contents page and front cover and asked a couple of set questions in order to find out what they liked about this magazine in order to co-operate that into my magazine fitting to what my target audience prefer the best. We mainly focused on the models pose, the colour schemes and what attracted them mostly about the front cover/contents page. This has really boosted the variety of ideas I had before to even more new ideas I have currently brainstormed. As I got reasonable feedback, I now know what I will work upon to create a best-selling magazine for my target audience.

In order to get a wide range of results to benefit me later during the project, I will be doing this survey to get around 20 people to give me feedback so then I can eventually produce my quantitative results through bar graphs, pie charts etc. using numerical forms for a accurate result. I haven't included many questions here as I mainly wanted to focus that on my focus group and get in depth answers.

MUSIC MAGAZINE: Research Rationale

My target audience are teenagers aged 15-19 and as I attend a sixth form I have easy access to my target audience in school which is beneficial for me to do surveys as I would have a variety of ages to ask from which also wouldn't be biased. I would result in getting more accurate results due to the fact that I have a wider range of audience around my community who fit into my target group too. I'm using more older teenagers for my research as the style of my magazine will best suit them and my targeted age group are more mature and aware of their music taste by now so I can seek further information to guide my research and my final magazine. The main reason why I chose this age range was because previously from other research I did, I discovered that the genre 'POP' really was admired by teenagers and many were inspired by 'POP' artists.

I would be conducting quantitative research where I will be creating questionnaires and putting them into graphs, tally charts etc where I can see statistics and accurate research to the final results formed. My questions asked would be varied and provide me a good amount of research to conduct final decisions for my magazine. I would be more acknowledged to the type of magazines my target group will purchase and work based on their feedback. I would need a lot of opinions to gather my answers together as having more people answer your questions is better than less.

For qualitative research I would be recording 2-3 peers from the sixth form I attend and collect detailed opinions on magazines. This will allow me to ask in depth questions and get fully worded replies from my peers. I would need a camera for this and I will interview me peers for more tips and ideas for my final magazine. With the quantitative research I would need the internet and this is where technological convergence comes in where I could use a variety of social media to get opinions through.

This research will end up giving me a lot more opinions about what my target audience expect and what I need to add in my magazine for people to consume my product. This research also will benefit me to a successful, aesthetically pleasing magazine.

MUSIC MAGAZINE: Magazine Typography Moodboard

Many music magazines use a variety of fonts depending on what kind of genre it is, for most of them the similarities come from the boldness, colour and the lettering of their mastheads. The purpose of this post was to research what fonts, lettering, names and colour are popular on music magazines currently. I think from this I know roughly how to style and letter my masthead including to focus on the colour of it too. Mastheads like 'XXL', 'NME', 'CLASH', 'VIBE' etc are all serifs which show the power it holds even from far away in supermarkets as it is visible and vibrant. 'BBC music' is a serif where it's shown to be sophisticated and angelic plus the 'u' in the lettering is emphasized using italics which can provide a personal message to the audience. 'Rolling Stone' font is a serif and has this royalty style to it, this makes it more elegant and the importance it holds in the magazine plus it looks handwritten and simple which is very effective which I love. As off from this research I think I now roughly have created one in my mind but I would have to test it out before any final decisions. I really have benefited from this typography research as it has ensured me to use the key elements when creating a masthead and sticking with what most people prefer.

MUSIC MAGAZINE: Music Magazine Deconstruction

I have deconstructed a 'Billboard' magazine as I liked the unique part of it using one feature colour. I have picked apart the conventions of this magazine and explained thoroughly what they show and why. I feel like this magazine also fits in with the genre 'Pop' and Beyonce is a pop artist too. I like the house style of this magazine and I am hoping this gives me some ideas of what to use in my magazine and what I could do different from other magazines.

MUSIC MAGAZINE: Magazine Moodboards/Market Research

Here are 4 different music magazines that I have put into a moodboard by conducting some market research. I mainly did this because I wanted to find out how front covers, contents page and double page spreads were presented in different types of genre magazines. By doing this research I can gather what to include in a music magazine when coming to do my own one. There are different types of conventions in all of these magazines and it definitely has helped me come up with few ideas of what my layout would be for my magazine, for example looking at events held, featuring popular artists, font styles etc. This market research involved reviewing current news, events, stories, artists of interest and narrowing it down to a simple moodboard with the key conventions you would expect in a music magazine. This research also helped me find out who's the big role model out there in the music industry where I can feature them on my magazine as it would make more sense to include popular artists on your magazine for a wide range of audience to buy your product.
